Choosing the right exhaust system for your Civic can be a headache. The fact that there are hundreds of different types of exhaust systems available means that you have to do your research before you can choose which one you want. There are a few different things to take into consideration so you should probably decide which are important to you before beginning.

• Sound. Many people get an exhaust system simply to improve the sound of their car. Deciding on how loud you want your car to be and what sort of sound you want can be hard at the best of times. The best option is to have a look on youtube and see if there are any specific videos containing the exhausts system you are looking at buying, chances are there will be.
• Power. If you are looking to obtain maximum power you will need to choose the right system, although sometimes this may conflict with your sound goals. Generally you will need to get an exhaust with larger diameter tubing in order to see an increase in power which brings me to sizing.
• Sizing. In terms of piping diameter larger is better BUT only if matched to the appropriate header. Don't let people tell you that naturally aspirated engines need back pressure to operate best because this is a myth. Having said that if you are not upgrading the headers or you have only purchased a cheap aftermarket set don't go too big, probably no larger than 1 inch over the stock size.
• Muffler. Depends on what style car you have/want. If you like to be seen and heard go for a cannon style muffler. If you prefer to operate a little more stealth I would recommend a standard chambered style muffler.
• Material. There are a few different types of materials that Civic exhaust systems usually are found in. These are mild steel and stainless steel. The advantage of stainless is that it is lighter, shinier and rust resistant whereas mild steel isn't. Other materials include titanium and aluminum which are much more expensive but are also much lighter and in the case of titanium stronger.
